Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 2 billion per year. We currently have 1,500 employees and 17,900 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The Division of Fluid and Experimental Mechanics within the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics conducts research and teaching in the field of hydropower.  The Division has via the John Field Laboratory access to state-of-the-art measurement methods and large computational resources.

We now offer one PhD position in the subject fluid mechanics with application to hydraulic turbines.

Subject description
Fluid Mechanics comprises the study of flow in porous media, multiphase flow and rheology, linked to industrial production, fluid flow optimisation and design of energy technology applications and magneto hydrodynamics.

Project description
Part load operation of hydraulic turbines is becoming more common with the introduction of intermittent renewable energies. Such operations induce unfavorable flow phenomena with large and undesirable pressure pulsations in the machines.

The project aims to further understand such flow phenomena and propose automatic countermeasures to operate the turbines in such conditions. The project is mainly experimental. Function of the results, measurements at different facilities in Sweden may be planned to perform experimental measurements.

Duties
As a PhD student you are expected to perform both theoretical, experimental, and eventually numerical work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. The majority of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies. In addition, you can have the opportunity to try the teacher role.

Qualifications
Applicants should have 300 credits in engineering physics, mechanical engineering, space technology, energy technology or equivalent of which 60 credits at the advanced level. Applicants must also have good knowledge of English, both spoken and written. Experience in model testing and control is a merit.
