Master Thesis: Navigating the Skies Together
The rapid proliferation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, promises to revolutionize various sectors, from delivery services and aerial photography to infrastructure inspection and emergency response. However, the safe integration of drones into the existing airspace, already crowded with traditional airplanes, presents significant challenges for air traffic management (ATM).
Research Question
How can operational and technical modifications to current Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems effectively and safely accommodate the increasing presence of drones while minimizing risks to both manned and unmanned aircraft as well as the man on the ground?
Objectives
*
To critically analyze the current regulatory framework and technological capabilities of ATM systems regarding drone integration.
*
To identify potential conflicts and safety risks associated with the co-existence of drones and traditional aircraft in shared airspace.
*
To explore and evaluate innovative solutions, both operational and technical, that can enhance the safety and efficiency of drone integration into ATM.
*
To propose important aspects for a future ATM system capable of seamlessly managing both manned and unmanned aircraft traffic.
Methodology
*
It is proposed to conduct a comprehensive review of existing research on drone integration into ATM, focusing on safety regulations, airspace management strategies, and emerging technologies.
*
Identify a specific set of realistic scenarios of drone operations within various airspace classes and analyze potential conflicts and safety risks using simulation tools.
*
It is proposed to evaluate if the the new System Theoretic Process Analysis Method (STPA) is a suitable technique to model the system in order to identify potential conflicts and safety risks.
Who are you
Do not hesitate to apply if you have a foundation in aerospace engineering or a related field, demonstrating a keen interest in the evolving landscape of aviation and unmanned aerial systems. We think you are fascinated by the challenges and opportunities presented by drone integration into existing airspace and have a desire to contribute to the development of safe and efficient solutions for this complex issue. A background in air traffic management principles, safety analysis techniques, or simulation modeling would be highly advantageous. Furthermore, you should be a strong communicator, capable of collaborating effectively with experts and operators in the field.
Number of Students: Suitable for two students
Credits: Suitable for 30 HP
As the position involves work that is covered by confidentiality, it is required that you complete and pass a security assessment.
Selection is ongoing. We look forward to your application!
