Thesis - Partial Discharge measurements for asset health monitoring
Företagsbeskrivning
We have been electrifying industries, powering homes and transforming life through innovation and collaboration for more than 100 years. Empowered by our goal, we are determined to enable fossil free living within one generation. To succeed we, as one of Europe's leading energy companies, must be fossil-free ourselves.
But that’s not enough. That’s why we are looking beyond our own industry, to see where we can really make a difference.
Join us in our journey towards a fossil-free life within one generation.

Om rollen
About the thesis
Vattenfall Distribution operates critical infrastructure that distributes just over half of all electricity produced in Sweden. Since the expansion of nuclear power in the 1970s and 1980s, the Swedish electricity grid has basically been completed and electricity use relatively stable. As society changes, new demands are placed on expansion of the electricity grid, electrification and connection of renewable production sources. We are now facing a period where large parts of the electricity network need to be strengthened and renewed and therefore Vattenfall Distribution has set a strategic goal for 2030 to develop a grid that can supply twice as much energy and with a reliability of 99.99%.
This change is now happening at a pace not seen before and therefore it’s crucial that all assets are monitored and maintained in an optimal and efficient way. Therefore, Vattenfall Distribution in cooperation with Vattenfall Research & Development is conducting a pilot project to test IoT sensors for monitoring the asset health in a substation. Partial discharge (PD) sensors monitoring a larger part of the station collects data and this assignment will focus on how to utilize these for detection of deterioration of assets and asset health.
This assignment is intended for one student and will include both interpreting collected data and proposing methods for monitoring health deterioration. PD detection devices, measuring continuously, produce large volumes of condition monitoring data. Each individual measurement contains a variety of information such as relevant condition data but also environmental data. A reference PD device is installed to measure the environmental noise. However, a method is needed to exclude environmental events to focus on the valuable condition information, in order to estimate the health of asset.
