PhD student in electrical power engineering
The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute and Luleå University of Technology announce a joint recruitment for a PhD position in electric power engineering.
About VTI
The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, is a government agency conducting applied research and advanced investigations in the transport sector. We have around 240 employees and an annual turnover of approximately 290 million SEK. The headquarters is located in Linköping, with additional offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Lund. We are now looking for another employee for the Traffic Analysis and Logistics unit. The unit has about 35 employees and works with applied and socially motivated research as well as advanced investigations in logistics, transport, energy supply, digitization, and traffic systems. The focus is on developing knowledge and models that enable more reliable decision-making to meet goals in areas such as efficiency, accessibility, mobility, environment, energy supply, resilience, and safety.
You will perform your daily work in Skellefteå, but the position’s location will be Linköping. This position is a shared role between VTI and LTU.
About LTU
Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas, among others Electric Power Engineering and Power Quality. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities.Fakta om universitetet | Luleå tekniska universitet.
Here you will have the opportunity to belong to an innovative research environment that develops new knowledge about one of the great societal challenges of our time.
Electrical Power Engineering belongs to the Division of Energy Science at the Department of Engineering Science and Mathematics, which is a subject-wise broad department with many successful research groups and recognized educational programs. In Electric Power Engineering, we have a close collaboration with industries and authorities in both research projects and student projects. The research is of high international standard, and we collaborate with researchers worldwide. In the area of power quality, the subject has a good reputation for its world-leading research. Over the years, the group's research results have attracted the attention of both industry and academia.
The group currently consists of three professors, senior researchers, and 20 doctoral students. Elkraftteknik | Luleå tekniska universitet
About the employment
Electric power engineering includes studies of sustainable systems for electricity generation and the transport of electrical energy, as well as the interaction between the power grid, electricity generation, and electricity use.
The project will link studies of driving patterns with studies of the impact on low-voltage networks in the form of changed power quality. The project’s focus is to systematically and scientifically compare the results for bidirectional vehicle charging (V2X) and smart charging against a baseline consisting of one-way charging. The project is expected to lead to increased knowledge on a broad front regarding levels and distribution of waveform distortion (harmonics, interharmonics, supraharmonics) in future low-voltage networks in connection with various types of vehicle charging solutions. The project is a collaboration between LTU and VTI, and you will be supervised by and work closely with researchers from both organizations.
A PhD position involves both theoretical and practical work. As a PhD student, you are trained in scientific work through the publication of scientific articles in journals and at national and international conferences. You also take mandatory and elective PhD courses. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to try out the teaching role. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a fantastic opportunity to learn how to manage challenging development projects. Your work will include theoretical models and simulations, but some practical measurements may also be included.
Your profile
You are qualified to apply for this position if you have a MSc or MEng or an technical degree suitable for research in electric power engineering, such as electrical engineering, electronics, energy technology, engineering physics, or fields. Alternatively you may be qualified for this position if you have, 240 higher education credits in electrical engineering, electronics, or equivalent with 60 higher education credits at an advanced level with courses in electric power engineering.
Advanced knowledge in written and spoken English is required. Swedish is an advantage. Previous experience in research, development, or research-oriented education in a subject relevant to the tasks is an advantage, as is the ability to contribute to teaching in the undergraduate engineering program (which is taught in Swedish).
Appointment period
This position is a shared role between LTU and VTI while you are admitted to the doctoral program at the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics at LTU. The appointment is for a maximum of one year at a time. Those who have received an appointment and successfully engaged in doctoral studies have priority for continued appointment. The position is limited to four years full-time. For more information about specific doctoral education, see Study plans for doctoral education within the technical faculty.
