The Department of Biology and Environment (BOM) is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities of this interdisciplinary department cover areas such as aquatic ecology, cell and organismal biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and technology, animal welfare and zoonotic ecology.

Subject area for the position: Ecology with specialization in Molecular microbiology.
Place of employment until further notice: Kalmar.
Scope and duration of employment: The employment is limited in time according to HF chapter 5 § 7. The total period of employment must not be longer than what corresponds to full-time postgraduate education for four years.
Access: Starting data according to agreement. Activities should start early 2025.

Job description

The ‘deep terrestrial biosphere’ contains a significant portion of the earth’s total biomass and despite existing in ‘extreme slow motion’ due to the highly oligotrophic conditions, these microbes can play a significant role in global nutrient cycles. However, due to its size and the difficulty of obtaining samples, the deep terrestrial biosphere is one of the least understood environments on earth.

The research project will investigate the deep biosphere present in terrestrial crystalline rock fracture systems. The project will use ‘multi omics’ to measure growth characteristics along with bioinformatic analyses of DNA/RNA sequencing data to investigate their replication.

The Higher Education Ordinance states that those employed as doctoral students must primarily devote themselves to their own education. However, an employee may work to a limited extent on education, research and administration. Such work may not cover more than 20 per cent of full working hours before the doctoral degree has been awarded.

Eligibility requirements

A person who has:

• completed a second-cycle degree
• completed course requirements totaling at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are at second-cycle level, or
• has acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside Sweden.

The candidate should have completed a degree matching the eligibility requirements listed above in microbiology or similar. The candidate should have a high proficiency in written and spoken English and have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.

Assessment criteria

While the position is primarily in environmental microbiology, knowledge of bioinformatics, the ability to code, and working with ‘R’ would place the candidate at an advantage. Experience working in a microbiology laboratory and relevant aseptic techniques plus DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and gel electrophoresis with extra merit of these techniques have been carried out on difficult to handle/low biomass samples. Lastly, experience of fieldwork would put the candidate at an advantage.
