The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are seeking to appoint a Technician to join our Neutron Chopper Systems group. A neutron chopper is a specialised electromechanical machine that can shape a particle beam using disks that rotate at very high speeds (20,000 rpm). The Chopper Systems Group is responsible for management of design, engineering, manufacturing maintenance and operation of the neutron chopper systems.

As a Technician for Neutron Chopper Systems at ESS, you will play a key role in supporting the design, development, and maintenance of complex mechanical and electrical systems integral to the operation of the facility. You will provide expert technical advice to mechanical engineers, offering insights on production methods, best practices, and process improvements as needed.

Your main areas of responsibilities as a Technician for Neutron Chopper Systems will be to:

• Offer expert technical advice to mechanical engineers in relation to productions methods, best practice and as required.
• Handle workshop equipment and tools, such as manual drills, lathes, and mills, as well as perform small soldering tasks.
• Assemble and handle both small and large components, including those exceeding 100kg.
• Perform maintenance, assembly, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and testing of electrical and mechanical systems (motors, cabinets, cabling).
• Take part in the R&D, testing and quality control processes as required.
• Execute equipment test programs.
• Manufacture small tooling, adjustments and bespoke parts.
• Participate in the procurement of parts and keeping stock control and inventory.
• Maintain the chopper facilities ready for use and ensure the safety of these working spaces.
Perform other workshop related tasks, including administrative aspects and documentation.

This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. Some limited travelling and working abroad may be required as necessary.

About you:

We are looking for a technician with practical experience in technical workshops and, ideally, building demonstrators, handling and maintaining medical equipment or similar complex devices. In particular, to be the successful candidate the following experience is required:

• A certified professional education in the field of Mechanical or Mechatronic Technology (mechanical technician, Industrial technician or similar certified professions).
• 5 or more years of experience in an engineering or other highly technical environment.
• Proven mechanical dexterity, able to manipulate precision jobs and to assemble complex parts.
• Practical experience with workshop equipment, including clean areas, cutting, and precision equipment, soldering, etc. as well as basic numeracy as required performing loading/cutting calculations.
• Wide-ranging experience of mechanical or electrical processes and practices is desirable.
• A good safety record, ideally with formal safety training applicable to workshop activities.
• Good oral and written communication skills in English.

Attention to detail, the ability to take on multiple tasks, adaptability, being a team player, and having a strong safety ethic are other requirements that are very important to this position.

In addition, the following experience would give you a strong advantage:

• Experience in electrical assembly of cabinets 400V or lower.
• Knowledge of dynamic balancing techniques.
• Understanding of vacuum systems.
• Experience of working in an international research environment.
• Ability to communicate in Swedish.

For this role, we need someone who can start as soon as possible. Shift work and occasional on-call duties will be required as necessary.

What can we offer?

Aside from the chance to work at truly unique big science project, you can also expect:

• An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
• A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
• A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.
