Department of Plant Biology
Are you interested in plant breeding and the development of novel crops for a sustainable agriculture and mitigation of climate change? We are looking for a highly motivated person to join our research on the domestication and breeding of perennial cereal grain crops at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden.
About the position
Our research group is working on the development of new perennial cereal grains within an extensive domestication and plant breeding program. Your research work will focus on questions of genetic and phenotypic diversity and to develop genomic selection models that will be applied in ongoing domestication and plant breeding efforts. You will work with large genotypic and phenotypic datasets and apply biometric approaches on different selection cycles and populations of a perennial relative of wheat, intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium) and other perennial grasses. You will also assist in evaluation of plant and agronomic traits in the field and in the laboratory.

Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated, committed and responsible person. We value good teamwork, initiative and organizational skills. You should meet the following basic requirements:

- Hold a PhD degree in plant biology with a focus on plant breeding, quantitative genetics, population genetics, bioinformatics or similar

- Ability to carry out and complete research projects, as evidenced by scientific publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals

- Good knowledge in genomics, bioinformatics and experience in statistical analysis of large datasets

- Experience of working both in the lab (DNA and RNA work) and in the field (phenotyping)

- Ability to formulate a research vision showing how you plan to use previously acquired knowledge and skills to advance the research project

- Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English

It is considered as a merit if you have:

- Experience from work with perennial crops and relatives of cereals

- Experience in analyzing genetic diversity, population genomics and population structure in plants, and knowledge of genomic selection models

As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are looking for a candidate with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.

About us
The department conducts fundamental and strategic research in plant biology and breeding on agricultural crops, forest trees, biofuel crops and model organisms. The Department of Plant Biology is located at the Uppsala BioCenter, which brings together departments with strong competence of international standard in plant biology, pathology, microbiology, food science, chemistry and biotechnology of great relevance for agriculture and forestry. The Uppsala BioCenter offers excellent facilities for breeding activities including state-of-the art greenhouses and climate chambers and molecular genetics and microscopy laboratories. The department is responsible for basic and advanced courses in general and molecular genetics, cell biology, plant physiology, plant breeding and molecular plant-interactions. In addition, the department contributes to various courses together with other departments.
