Position description
Construction industry is one of the biggest contributors to waste and carbon emission and this sector is at a crossroads. Unless major changes, the industry risks failing to meet the increasing demands for climate neutrality and sustainability. It is imperative to build, demolish, and rebuild with a clear purpose and in a smarter way. A substantial share pf the global energy usage is related to heating of buildings and at the same time a huge part for the emission of carbon dioxide is related to the manufacturing and transportation of construction materials. More than 50% of the existing buildings in Sweden and Europe are old and in need of renovation to stand for the development of climate neutral cities. To achieve climate neutrality advanced research is needed with focus on the circularity of construction materials for the benefit of the environment, economy and the natural resources.

This position focuses on identifying challenges and opportunities related to circularity of materials in building sector (adaptation, recycling and reusing of materials), mapping projects and case studies connected to the adaptation, reusing and recycling of building materials in Sweden, and to evaluate the quality of various construction materials for these purposes, as well as to evaluate of the environmental impact of reusing/recycling construction materials for new buildings, e.g.  through Life cycle Assessments. The position will be also focusing on the development of digital methods for accelerating the renovation potential of old constructions.

The candidate will mainly focus on research study activities; however, the candidate may participate in other duties including teaching and supervision on bachelor and master lever. The position is 4-5 years depending on the percent of other duties.

Qualifications

For basic eligibility, the following is required:

• A degree at an advanced level
• At least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 are at an advanced level.
• Equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad through other means.

Specific entry requirements to be admitted to Energy and Environmental
Engineering are met if a person have a degree (or equivalent studies) at
advanced level in an engineering or natural sciences area/subject sufficiently
relevant for the third-cycle education project in question.

We are looking for someone who preferably, for example, has a a MSc degree in building engineering with focus on recycling and reusing of building materials.

We are looking for someone with very good English skills in writing scientific articles and orally presenting research results.
