The European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS) is a partnership organisation of 13 European member countries located in the city of Lund, Sweden. The ESS is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation, and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role

The ESS is at an exciting turning point - it is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are now seeking to appoint an Automation Engineer for the Motion Control & Automation Group (MCAG). The MCAG is responsible for deploying PLC motion control systems to the Neutron Scattering Instruments, delivered by European in-kind partners to ESS. The task of the group is to develop standards for motion at ESS and work with partners to implement these across the whole facility. The focus of the group is to support the construction of neutron instruments in NSS.

The position requires an expert in Motion Control and Functional Safety of Moving Machinery especially for the evaluation and implementation of motion safety requirements into the Safety-Related Parts of the Control System (SRP/CS).

Your main area of responsibility as an Automation Engineer for Motion Safety will be to represent the efforts on Functional Safety of Moving Machinery for Neutron Instruments within the Common Motion Control & Automation (CMCA) Project.

In the construction phase:

• Coordinate with the instrument team in evaluating the motion hazards; define & document motion safety requirements according to EN ISO 12100 and 13849.
• Support the MCA eplan team in designing and verifying the necessary safety circuits.
• Test and validate the system after installation.
• Prepare and compile all necessary documentation and represent CMCA in the Instrument Safety Readiness Reviews (ISRR).
• Point of contact for colleagues and in-kind partners in this competence area.
• Communicate and link between external safety experts, the different Instruments Teams, in-kind partners, the ESS MCAG and other ESS groups relevant for motion safety.

In the operation phase:
• Constantly apply above tasks after large service, reconstruction or enhancement/ enlargement measures of Neutron Instruments.
• Organise the regular hazard evaluations and validation measures for experiments on instruments especially on user-owned equipment.
• Support user operation by evaluating for motion safety; implement and validate

This is a permanent position based in Lund, Sweden, and we need someone who can start as soon as practically possible.

You have experience in the evaluation, design, test, validation and documentation of functional safety systems in industrial or scientific environment. Experience in managing small development projects and interfacing with scientists and scientific project managers is important.

Furthermore, you have:

• Knowledge about the workflow of implementing functional safety in moving machinery, preferably according to EN ISO 13849 and EN 61800-5-2.
• Experience in preparing documentation according to the engineering workflow of a functional safety system to comply with the relevant European directives and standards.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.

Additional experiences that will be an advantage for the appointed candidate include:

• Experience in the design of motion control systems preferably for scientific large-scale user facilities
• Knowledge of scientific instruments and its associated motion control and safety techniques.

We believe that you enjoy communication and collaborating with a large number of internal and external stakeholders, and you feel comfortable working in an international environment.
