Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

FlexPES Beamline
FlexPES is an undulator-based soft x-ray beamline, which is operational from 2020.

It has two branches and can accommodate up to four end stations, which are used in particular for high-resolution spectroscopy (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS)) on surfaces and in gas phase. One end station is dedicated to UHV surface science, and two more are for photoemission and electron-ion coincidence studies on gases, clusters and liquids. There is also a port for the user-defined experiments. A description of the beamline can be found at https://www.maxiv.lu.se/beamlines-accelerators/beamlines/flexpes/

This position is associated with the UHV surface & material science branch of the beamline, and is focused on the own research projects of the candidate in these fields. Therefore, we are looking for a candidate not only experienced in surface science and UHV related techniques but also with mature own ideas for research projects to be realized at FlexPES. These research projects can cover areas of molecular adsorption, on-surface reactions, growth and characterization of 2D materials, thin films, nanostructures, and similar. An ability to establish collaborative research with other groups outside MAX IV and to involve them into activities at FlexPES would be an advantage.

Work tasks

- You will work together with the beamline team helping with the everyday operation and participating in various development projects at the Surface and Material branch. These projects can include design of new experiments/sample environments, integration of new equipment, automation of experiments, development of control systems, etc.
- You are expected to participate in giving support to the user groups, with the chance to get involved in collaborations with various users and beamline staff, and pursue your own research and/or development projects.
- You will have an opportunity to conduct your own research with the STM system available at MAX IV, and may participate in beamtimes at other beamlines and other synchrotron facilities.

You are expected to have and demonstrate strong interest and sufficient skills in driving first of all scientific projects, from proposal writing to data analysis and preparing publications. Interest in developing new experimental setups, sample environments and detection schemes, which can advance experimental capabilities at the beamline, is also considered as a merit.

Qualifications

- A PhD in physics, solid state chemistry, or similar, obtained within no longer than 3 years from the application submission date
- Documented experience in the use and maintenance of ultra-high vacuum equipment is required
- Documented experience in driving research projects, data analysis and preparing scientific publications is required
- Proven experience in NEXAFS and XPS with synchrotron radiation is required
- Experience in other spectroscopic techniques, advanced data analysis and/or programming skills is a strong plus
- Experience in scanning tunneling microscopy is a plus

As a person you have the ability to work in a team, have good communication skills and a good command of English, both verbal and written.

Eligibility
Appointment to the position of postdoc requires that the applicant has a PhD or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the application deadline. Under special circumstances the PhD can have been completed before the aforementioned three years.

Further information
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment. A postdoctoral fellow is employed under a period of at least two years and at most three years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor-2022-02-01” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow, 2022-02-01”).
