Postdoc in Blue Biotechnology -Alternative Protein from Microalgae

Anställning

Heltid

Lönetyp

Fast månads- vecko- eller timlön

Would you like to dive into exciting research in blue biotechnology? We are looking for a postdoc to join our team at the Department of Life Sciences -Food and Nutriton Science Division, Chalmers University of Technology to shape next generation alternative food protein ingredients from marine microalgae.

Throughout your work, you will harness the double values of microalgae - as nutrient remediators and biomass producers. Results pave the way for increased circularity and diversification in the seafood industry, ultimately stimulating a sustainable blue economy.

About us
The division of Food and Nutrition Science (FNS) is one of four research divisions at the Department of Life Sciences (LIFE). FNS addresses major societal challenges related to sustainable food production, nutrition and health. Our research ranges from food chemistry and technology to precision nutrition, with a strong focus on marine and plant-based food systems. By combining fundamental and applied research, we aim to improve food quality, reduce losses across the value chain, recover nutrients from alternative biomasses, and advance understanding of how foods and diets impact human health. The research is also related to global food security topics in an international context.

About the research project
As a Postdoc, you will be integrated into the EU-project SEAlgaePower, in which marine microalgae-based technologies are used to upcycle nutrients from saline seafood process waters, while simultaneously producing valuable biomass.

A core of the project is to tailor mild biorefinery sequences to the microalgal biomasses for recovery of proteins, omega-3-rich lipids and polysaccharides applied in nutraceuticals, food, feed and beyond. Your focus is primarily on extraction and characterization of algal food protein ingredients, ensuring high yield and quality. The latter will be optimized from several aspects, including e.g., in vitro nutrient digestibility and volatile compound profile. The work will be carried out in close collaboration between academic and industrial partners paving the way for fast implementation of project results.

Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:

• To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in Bioscience, Biotechnology, Food Science, Biochemical engineering, Biochemistry or similar, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline*.
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English
• Strong analytical skills
• Experience from protein extraction

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

*The date on your doctoral degree certificate is considered the official date of completion. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service.

The following experience will be highly meritorious:

• Research experience from work with:

• microalgae/single cells
• omega-3 fatty acids
• in vitro digestions
• volatile compound analyses

What you will do

• Work with the research project with a specific focus on extracting and characterizing microalgal protein ingredients using biorefinery sequences, ensuring high yield and multifunctionality
• Supervise master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent
• Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master’s level

The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.

Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
