Interested in tolerancing and geometry assurance? Join us at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science, Chalmers University of Technology, and help advance knowledge in the field of variation simulation and digital twins.

About us
The Department of Industrial and Materials Science shares knowledge and their vision of technical solutions for the future industry in a sustainable society. Through excellent research, innovation, and education, we contribute to the development of future industrial value chains.

The Division of Product Development conducts research and education in innovative and sustainable product realisation. We combine technology, design and user perspectives to create the products and solutions of the future. The Geometry Assurance and Robust Design research group is well established nationally and internationally and have a strong industrial collaboration.

About the research project
Geometry assurance ensures that parts and assemblies meet functional and aesthetic requirements despite manufacturing variation. The Chalmers Geometry Assurance & Robust Design Group develops integrated methods and tools that connect design, manufacturing, and metrology for robust, high-precision production.
With the rise of 6G, digital twins, and advanced 3D sensing, manufacturing is becoming increasingly connected and adaptive. This postdoctoral position will develop next-generation geometry assurance methods that use these technologies to enable zero-defect, data-driven production.

Key research directions can include:

• Closed-loop digital twins for geometry assurance – integrating live sensor geometric sensor data with simulation for real-time control and adaptive assembly. This builds on existing work within the group on digital twins for geometry assurance.
• AI for automatic tolerance specification – developing methods to automatically generate locating schemes and tolerance types, guided by established tolerancing principles and powered by artificial intelligence.
• Trustworthy AI for 3D inspection – applying AI to point clouds and meshes for defect detection.
• Additional research topics, combined with the bullets above, can be based on the applicant’s background and research interests. Applicants are encouraged to describe their own ideas within the geometry assurance framework in the application.

Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:

• To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in mechanical or production engineering, or a closely related field awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline*.
• You will be expected to be motivated, independent, and collaborative, with good communication and teamwork skills.
• You will need strong written and verbal skills in English

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

*The date on your doctoral degree certificate is considered the official date of completion. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

• Knowledge in tolerancing, geometry assurance, dimensional accuracy, as well as a strong mathematical background.
• Industrial experience is highly valued.

What you will do

• Work in research projects related to geometry assurance.
• Supervise master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent
• Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master’s level

The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.

Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
