Design Trainee

At IKEA, we believe great design should be accessible to the many people. As a Design Trainee, you will support the development of home furnishing products that combine form, function, quality, sustainability and low price – what we call Democratic Design.

Working closely with experienced designers and product development teams, you will contribute to developing products that strengthen the unique IKEA identity and create better solutions for everyday life at home.

Your assignment

During the trainee period, you will:

• Support the development of unique IKEA products aligned with our Democratic Design principles
• Work closely with experienced designers as mentors throughout the design process
• Create sketches, renderings, prototypes and concept visualisations
• Design products with a cost-conscious approach, enabling efficient production and lower prices
• Explore solutions for flat-pack, standardized materials and efficient production
• Present and communicate design concepts to cross-functional teams
• Gain experience across different product categories and production processes

About you

You are a curious and creative designer who is passionate about home furnishing and life at home. You enjoy exploring new ideas, collaborating with others and turning insights into practical design solutions.

You likely:

• Have a strong interest in form, function, materials and aesthetics
• Are curious about people’s needs, cultures and everyday life at home
• Enjoy experimenting with new ideas and seeing them develop from concept to product

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Product Design, Industrial Design or Furniture Design
• Skills in hand sketching, physical models, 2D graphics and 3D renderings
• Interest in Scandinavian design and home furnishing
• Ability to communicate ideas visually and verbally
