Political Economic Specialist

The Political-Economic Specialist is the senior locally employed staff member in the Political and Economic Section, supporting the section and Front Office on a full range of political-economic reporting, analysis, and engagement to advance U.S. interests in Sweden. The incumbent serves as a subject matter expert on domestic political developments and key policy areas including political-military affairs, NATO engagement, Arctic issues, cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and space, conducting independent research, providing policy recommendations, and drafting analytical reports and briefings.

Working with a high degree of independence under general supervision, the incumbent advises Mission leadership and Washington stakeholders on developments affecting U.S. interests and the bilateral U.S.-Sweden relationship. The position develops and maintains a broad network of contacts across government, parliament, academia, and civil society, and supports official visits, programs, and reporting requirements in coordination with colleagues across the Mission.

Education Requirements:

A Master degree in political science, security studies or war studies, political economics (economic policy), or international relations.

Experience:

At least 4 years of experience in political science, international affairs, government, the military, or public policy with a strong emphasis on research and analysis.

Language:

English - Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate.

Swedish - Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate.

Job Knowledge:

Possess a good understanding of the host country's political situation, economy, institutions, and operations. Must have (or capable of developing) contacts in relevant government offices and parliament. Familiar with U.S. government structure and foreign policy. A good knowledge of the European Union, and other international organizations relevant to the section.
